American Bar Association SEER Leadership Development Program

The American Bar Association Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources (ABA SEER) is pleased to announce the launch of its new Leadership Development Program (LDP). The LDP is designed to identify Section members with leadership potential and to provide a curriculum of training and involvement that will encourage and equip them to assume leadership roles in the Section in the future.

In the LDP’s inaugural year (2010-2011), SEER is seeking to identify and enroll our first Class–twelve Section members who exhibit an interest in increased Section involvement or leadership and who can commit to the one-year leadership curriculum. We anticipate that these individuals will reflect the diversity of the Section’s members.

About the Program

* You would like to offer your experience and expertise to the Section, but you would first like to learn more about the Section, how it works, and where you can best contribute.
* You have been a Section leader in the past but aren’t sure what the next step for you should be.

Full-time Waste Action Assistant, as part of a Stopwaste.org internship — EarthTeam Environmental Network — Berkeley, CA

The EarthTeam Waste Action Assistant will support EarthTeam’s Climate Action Campaign Director, as part of the Alameda County of Education’s Service-Learning Waste Reduction Project (SLWRP), as well as the Executive Director and other EarthTeam staff. The Waste Action Assistant will provide lesson plans and/or give PowerPoint presentations at middle and high schools enrolled in the SLWRP program, as well as conduct school waste audits. Other tasks include updating 4R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rot) curriculum; keeping the Waste Action database and website up-to-date; communicating with schools via phone, email, and site visits; scheduling with schools; and specific project support as needed. The Waste Action Assistant will also provide administrative duties to EarthTeam as needed, and will have the opportunity to gain exposure to and support EarthTeam’s other programs, including restoration work, watershed education, student leadership development, and multimedia skills.

Position Responsibilities

• Support to the Climate Action Campaign Director: researching, updating, and organizing program materials for waste audits and 4R curriculum; conducting outreach to SLWRP schools and communicating directly with teachers and students to schedule programming; providing introductory 4R presentations to schools; conducting follow-up waste audits; updating the Waste Action database and statistics as needed; and providing any other related program support as needed.
• Support to the Executive Director and other EarthTeam staff including, but not limited to: maintaining and expanding internal record keeping and filing systems, data entry, assisting in the development of proposals and reports to program funders, researching and tracking funder requirements and reporting deadlines, assistance in large-scale restoration events, support with student programs and student leadership forums.
• Program Support: communicating with program partners, material preparation and logistic support for program events, and supporting teacher and student outreach efforts.
• Communications: responding to information requests, helping cover office phones, writing monthly email newsletters, writing bi-annual mail newsletters, database work, community outreach, tabling.
• Training: attendance and participation at all Stopwaste.org trainings and meetings.

We are seeking an intelligent, dynamic, self-starting, and highly motivated individual to run our public policy program. (Depending on the individual selected, this may be a senior-level Director or a junior-level Coordinator position.)

The Policy Director is responsible for working with the Executive Director, other staff, key Board members and allies to develop and implement Clean Fuels Ohio’s (CFO) policy program, including a state public policy agenda. This will require communicating and building/maintaining relationships with many industry, community and government allies, legislators and staff, executive agency officials, and others, and handle some communication with media. The Policy Director will need to become a subject-matter expert in transportation-related technologies, energy sources, and strategies, along with related public-policy models and concepts. The Policy Director also will be expected to work with CFO’s Development Director to raise funds to support the policy program. Other responsibilities may include producing various written materials and digital media, engaging in CFO-related social media, organizing and conducting meetings and events, researching technologies and policy issues, intern hiring/supervision. The Policy Director will need to stay abreast of significant related federal, state and local policy issues. He/she also will need to travel around Ohio to meet with industry allies and local officials, and occasionally travel out of state.

August 22-27, 2010 — Biodiversity Assessment at Omega Institute
A five-day intensive course to introduce principles of biodiversity conservation, and techniques for recognizing biodiversity resources. The course will include hands-on exercises in remote sensing and field identification of habitats; discussions of ecology and conservation of rare species, and exercises in open space planning, and designing land development projects in ways that minimize harm to biologically sensitive areas. November 5, 2010 — Woody Plant Identification and Natural History in Winter
* Learn how to use keys to identify trees, shrubs, and woody vines in winter condition
* Acquire identification skills that are useful for, e.g., wetland boundary delineation, surveys for rare species, habitat identification, reviews of land use proposals, and landscape design
* Examine the identification characters of many species in the field
* Browse a collection of books about the identification and ecology of northeastern woody plants
* Learn how herbarium specimens can be used as reference for identification of new material
* Discover facts about the natural history and human use of various species
* Learn where some of the rare woody species occur, which woody plants are useful indicators of environmental conditions, and how certain invasive nonnative species are troublesome in our region.

This workshop is designed for biologists, environmental professionals, horticulturists, and students who already have some field experience with woody plants and want to develop their abilities to identify woody species in winter using twigs, buds, leaf scars, pith, bark, and other winter identification characters. The workshop emphasizes hands-on observation and practice with plants in the field, specimens, hand lens, keys, and field guides.

Course instructors Erik Kiviat PhD and Gretchen Stevens have 40 and 30 years of experience, respectively, with the northeastern woody flora in winter condition.

Lunch and snacks will be provided. Tentative location: Bard College Field Station, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Course materials (books, 10x hand lens) will be for sale at the site. We expect to use Muenscher’s Keys to Woody Plants revised by Cope (2001), and G. Petrides, A Field Guide to Trees and Shrubs 2nd ed. Several binocular dissecting microscopes will be available.

Associate Attorney Position — Earthjustice Int’l — Oakland, CA

Earthjustice’s International Program is now accepting applications for a two to three-year Associate Attorney position, located in our Oakland, California office. We are seeking an attorney with one to five years of experience to work on issues of international environmental law, climate change, and international human rights and the environment.

Earthjustice is the nation’s largest nonprofit public interest environmental law firm. Earthjustice’s International Program uses the power of the law to protect the environment and human health worldwide. We represent public interest and community groups in international tribunals and domestic courts to hold corporations and governments responsible for environmental harm and to create strong tools for citizens to defend the right to a healthy environment. Our docket currently includes litigation and legal advocacy to reduce greenhouse gases from mobile sources; establish domestic and international regulatory mechanisms for black carbon and other global warming pollutants; stop the exploitation of tar sands; develop effective environmental governance structures for the Arctic; promote public participation in environmental protection worldwide; and promote and protect the human right to a healthy environment.
